How to See Religion Differently A Personal Journey of Questioning, Identity and Independent Thought
All my books are written under my author pseudonym, Luke Pemberton.
In How to See Religion Differently, Luke Pemberton explores one of the most significant questions many people face during adulthood: how do we decide which beliefs are truly our own?
Raised within the Christian tradition and educated for many years in religious schools, the author spent much of his life accepting a set of beliefs that formed an important part of his identity. Following a period of personal reflection, psychotherapy and self-examination, he began the challenging process of asking himself why he believed what he believed and whether those beliefs still reflected his own understanding of the world.
This book is not an attack on religion or on people of faith. Rather, it is an exploration of what happens when an individual develops the confidence to examine inherited assumptions and think independently about questions of meaning, morality, purpose and identity.
Using humour, illustrations and personal stories, the author describes the emotional and intellectual journey of moving from certainty to curiosity, from inherited belief to personal conviction, and from dependence on external authority to greater self-trust.
Along the way, he reflects on the influence that religious ideas can have on self-esteem, shame, personal responsibility and psychological development, while also acknowledging the important role that faith, community and spiritual traditions play in the lives of many people.
Ultimately, this is a book about intellectual courage. It invites readers—whether religious, non-religious or undecided—to reflect on their own beliefs, values and assumptions, and to consider how they arrived at them.
At its heart, the book is a celebration of thoughtful questioning, personal authenticity and the freedom to make up one's own mind about life's biggest questions.
